January 14, 2010 (Gary, IN) - The year 2010 has started out bright for the Gary Chicago Airport. After recently receiving a positive report from its audit by the State Board of Accounts, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has completed its annual inspection with high remarks.
The FAA conducts inspections at airports with Airport Operating Certificates annually to ensure compliance with aviation regulations FAR Part 139. Airport files, movement areas, aircraft rescue and fire fighting procedures and records, fueling facilities, and night procedures are aspects of the inspection.
Airport Operations Manager Kahari Velez and Division Fire Chief Anthony McClinton were airport management involved in the inspection. The inspection resulted in zero operational or airfield maintenance discrepancies and only three minor administrative observations. The FAA inspector praised the superb condition of the airport despite almost twenty consecutive prior days of snow removal operations. She also noted that the airport fire station response to a mock emergency was well below required time limits.
Director Curry stated, “We welcome the FAA inspection because it is the aviation measurement tool that provides us an independent report on how we are performing as an airport. The priority of the airport is to provide a safe and secure operation for our tenants and residents and the Part 139 report reveals that we are. The Airport Authority has provided the oversight that has allowed the airport staff to achieve very high operational standards as identified with the FAA inspection and the recent State Audit report. Indeed we are off to a very good start for 2010. As with every report there is always room to improve and we will strive to obtain a higher standard for the next year.
The airport management and staff continues to set higher standards for serving the Northwest Indiana region and delights in receiving positive feedback regarding its efforts.
