Gary/Chicago Airport's internal tracking reports confirm a steady growth in Pan American Airways passengers despite the September 11th national challenges to the aviation industry. 1st Quarter 2002 was up 2% versus 1st Quarter 2001.
"An even stronger indicator of our potential strength is in the March numbers. With passengers exceeding 4500 in March 2002, it appears that Pan Am generated an approximate 20% increase versus the prior year. According to our records, this makes March the strongest month ever with the next closest month recorded in July 2000." states Paul Karas, Administrator Gary/Chicago Airport.
In 2002, the Gary/Chicago Airport continued its efforts to build awareness in the Northwest Indiana and Chicago markets via its marketing efforts across multiple mediums. In addition, the airport implemented a focused "Spring Break" ad campaign in print, cable tv, radio, flyers, as well as in university newspapers. Pan Am Portsmouth sales manager, Jean Jensen, indicated that increased exposure and support to the community via promotional tickets to high profile charities and local events has helped build awareness.
"Pan Am responded to our community's request to return to non-stop service to the Orlando/Sanford market. We're confident that this adjustment as well as the many strides by the airport over the last 6 months has helped strengthen our market." notes William L. Staehle-President, Gary/Chicago Airport Authority.
