Gary/Chicago Airport Economic Impact Reaches $133 Million

GARY/CHICAGO AIRPORT ECONOMIC IMPACT REACHES $133 MILLION

The Aviation Association of Indiana, AAI, released its statewide study, The Economic Impact of Airports in Indiana, 2003 reporting that the Gary/Chicago International Airport had economic impact totaling $133,099,069, tripling the $45 million level reported in 2001. The study quantifies the value of the economic benefits generated at airports throughout the State of Indiana, both individually and collectively.

Ranked 6th highest in economic impact out of 104 airports and heliports state-wide, Gary/Chicago International Airport's results reflect the critical role that the airport plays in the community's infrastructure and transportation system.

Gary Mayor Scott L. King stated, "The substantial increase in economic impact over the 2001 confirms the critical role that the Gary/Chicago International Airport plays in the bigger picture of the regional transportation issue."

The numbers in the report reflect the activity that has been generated by the airports during the calendar year 2003. Using conservative formulas and multipliers for this study, the AAI has measured the economic impact of airports in Indiana every other year starting with the first report published in 1984.

The 2003 study findings reported a $4.6 billion economic impact on Indiana's economy. Indiana airports employed more than 18,940 people with $478 million in direct wages statewide. Adjusting for inflation, the economic impact of Indiana airports has more than tripled since the study was initially published in 1984.

With an environmental impact statement currently under FAA review, the Gary/Chicago International Airport is positioned for continued expansion including relocation of the E.J. & E railroad, existing runway extension from 7,000 to 8,900 feet, as well as expansion of terminal building and apron. As air service development and construction projects continue resulting in incremental jobs, business and revenue generation opportunities, long term economic impact growth is expected.
